Noodle, you have been connecting the dots lately and have really made strides in communication. Here's a few examples:
I had you on my lap while eating a piece of apple pie with some cheese. You pointed to my cheese (basically, you lunged at it) and said "geeze... geeze!" and then you ate all my cheese.
Later that day you found the remote control for the TV on the floor and you picked it up, saying "mo...mo...mo..." You found the remote! Thank you.
Today, Daddy asked you if you were ready to take a nap and you said "Nap!" So off the two of you went, and nap you did.
It's fascinating to watch you figure out what to say.
We've learned something else. The only surefire way we've found to quiet a rowdy or cranky Noodle is to pull out the Exergen temporal thermometer and beep scan your various body parts. I take the temperature of your nose, your cheeks, your tummy, your armpit, your forehead, your ears, your hand, your neck... and you hold perfectly still. You must think that is very important. Sure. It is! Incidentally, the tip of your nose is usually equally as warm as your forehead. Who would have thought?
We're going up to the farm this weekend and we're going to stay there for a week! Grandpa will take you for a ride on the tractor every day. I can't wait to see if you remember the farm, and the tractor. I think I'll just put you down outside when it's daylight and see if you run straight to the tractor.
Hugs, love, and kisses,
Mom

FYI
You made your inner ear turn red the other night by stuffing Goldfish crackers into it! Thought you might want to know that.

Time warp
Darling, I'm sorry. You grew so big so fast, and I haven't written about it. Here's a bunch of snapshots of what you've been up to:
Over Labor Day weekend, we took you to Omaha to help celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary. We stayed in the corner room of the element hotel. It juts out over a street corner. You spent a lot of time standing on the couch, watching the cars and trucks go by. Trucks were your favorite!
The next day we went to the Omaha Zoo and wheeled you through the apes and aquariums. I think we liked it more than you did. You took a nap through part of it. When you were awake, you were eating string cheese. Boy, do you love string cheese.
You sprouted several more teeth, including your first molars. This was very hard on you. You missed a lot of sleep and cried a lot in the day. We learned to alternate the baby Tylenol with the baby Advil so you could always be on some pain relief. Molars are mean. You now have three out of four of your first-year molars, with the fourth one bulging on your lower left.
You know what your teeth are. You also know tongue, ears, toes, knees, bum, feet, hair, and head, in addition to all your earlier body parts (eyes, nose, etc.). You're really smart. Today you saw a plane go by and you tried to tell your 22-month-old friend... you tapped him and pointed at the sky and said "Ah! Ah! Ah!" But he didn't notice.
At this point, you weigh 24 pounds. You're pretty tall, but I need to measure you. Your feet have grown and you wear size 6 shoes. We put you in squeaky shoes for church. :)
We took you to the Feast in Vail, Colorado. Before we got there, we stopped and visited Mommy's college friend. Her boys have about 150 Hot Wheels, and you were almost always clutching one or more. So Daddy and I bought you 10 Hot Wheels at the Feast. We also gave you a big die cast Ford F150 truck, which you carry around all the time now.
At the Feast, you kissed Makayla. A couple days later you kissed Elaine. A couple days after that, Makayla two-arm shoved you onto the ground. You poor thing. You're a lover, not a fighter!
Now we are at home again, and you are happy. You're getting back into a groove with sleeping. You've slept through the night three times since we got home. You also get to go outside more now, since it is cooler. You love to play in the leaves and to pull our green Roma tomatoes off the vine. You think they are "ball-ball".
Speaking of "ball-ball", you say more words now. Today you said, "No, mama!" when I was picking you up. No, mama?! No picking you up? No kisses? I know you don't mean that. You love kisses, and you almost always prefer to be in someone's arms than down on the ground. I think you still love being in my arms more, but Daddy is really growing on you. He's home a lot more lately, since he lost his job in September. Actually, two days ago when I was trying to get you to take a nap, I sang you a song that had the word "Daddy" in it. That made it impossible for you to sleep! "Dada?" you said, raising your head. "Dada?" Sigh. Naptime ended, promptly. No more mention of Daddy at naptime from now on. Momma learns a little every day.

I love you, Noodle! You are my favorite little thing, and the cutest little boy there ever was.

All the lights are on
Well, there you are! Honey bun, you have reached an impressive level of comprehension. You really know where you are, what you're doing, and you understand what's going on around you. It's as if suddenly, all the lights are on inside your head.
Sometimes you tell me when Daddy gets home from work. You see him pull into the driveway and say "Dad-Dad!". If the trash truck is coming, I only have to say "Sam! Trash truck!" and you race to the window. When it's time to go somewhere, I tell you we need to put on your shoes, and you go fetch them. Of course, at times you pretend not to hear me, or you simply don't respond when I tell you to stop playing in the cat food, or to shut my cabinet doors. But you do hear me. You hear very well.
Today you showed me that you are totally ready to go down the stairs by yourself. I learned this by thinking your voice sounded strangely muffled, and I found you in the lowest level of the house. I was shocked... but then relieved. You sit down on each step, and you are very careful. I'm really impressed!
You say quite a few words, but your favorite is "ball-ball". Today you walked toward me holding something very small in your hand. When you got to me, you said "ball-ball?" and handed me the corpse of a shiny fly. We washed your hands after that. You also think an apple is a ball-ball, and any round thing of various sizes. How cute.
You always like getting your hands washed, by the way. You don't like it when wet food or drinks spill onto your hands or clothes. You come up to me, showing me the wet area, and fussing a little.
I like that you are inclined to be clean, but not fussy about real dirt. Real dirt is just fine with you. When we were in Michigan, you sat down in Grandpa's garden and shoveled dirt onto yourself. Your legs were nearly covered in dirt. You would have kept shoveling for a long time, but we had to move on.
Speaking of Michigan, you LOVED it there. You played outside so much! You saw cows (you let one lick your finger!) and you fell in love with Grandpa's tractor. If you were outside, chances are you were on your way to the tractor. You would take the nearest person by the hand and lead them to the tractor. Grandpa took you for a ride nearly every day and it made him so happy. I took a video of you riding on his lap. Each time you locked eyes with me during the ride, you said "Wooowwww." It's one of my favorite things I've ever seen!
All my family members were home and you were sweet to all of them. Even the men, of whom you have sometimes been scared.
You are not a fan of the lake, and you have lately stopped being a fan of bath time. At least the part when you have to get washed. You do not seem to like getting your head wet anymore. I think it's because your face has gotten wet a couple times when we tried to bathe you "shower style".
Lastly, a sad note. You were sleeping through the night 80% of the time before we went to Michigan. In Michigan, you learned again to wake every night. You are still doing that. Remember, my dear love, that I am a nicer and funner momma when I am well rested. You are a nicer and funner boy when you are well rested, too. If that doesn't add up to you, please learn to cry "Dad-Dad" when you wake up at night.
I love you!

A twip is what a toddler takes when he wides on a pwane
Tomorrow you and I are getting on a plane and flying to Michigan!
I'm so excited! You may or may not understand, but I've been telling you about the trip lately. We're going to fly on a plane, and we're going to see family, and we're going to the farm! There are cows and a dog on the farm!
Daddy is staying home to feed the kittens and prepare dinner for when we get back.
Now, this flying takes much strategic planning. Did you know that I shipped diapers to the farm weeks ago? Did you know that I downloaded apps and things to amuse you on the plane? Did you know that I bought special toys and foods to distract you while flying? Did you know that I'm hoping you'll just fall asleep anyway? And after all that... I'm still hoping there will be a strange-looking person sitting next to us to intimidate you into a quiet, contemplative state. Just in case.
Please don't pay any attention to your advancing molars while we're flying. No one wants to hear 90 minutes of wailing. Just look out the window (we've got all window seats - both ways!). Check for birds. See if the clouds are shaped like pigs (a new fascination for you). And keep your eye on that strange man, who may or may not be trying to eat some of your in-flight cheese.
We're going to have a great time!
XOXOXOXO

What you say
Hey there, little man! Your vocabulary is growing! Here's what you've been saying, and what it means:
Woowwww, wowww: I just did something cool!
Daggun!: This is exciting!
Ahhh?: I want some of that.
Nuh-uh: No, I am not going to do what you asked me to do.
Burr: Bird
Bah: Ball
Booh: Book
All: Owl
Per: Peeper
At?: What's that?
Da-dirt!: I see a car!
Grrrrr, grrrr!: I see a truck!
Eeeooo, eeeooo: I see a cat!
AHHHEEEEEE!: Don't touch what I'm touching!
Uh-oh-oh: I dropped something, intentionally or otherwise.
Mom-mom-mom: Fix it.
Ha ha!: Ha ha!
You learn something new - or lots of somethings - every day. Right now you are playing and saying "Wow, oh wow, oh wow!" That's one of my favorite things to hear. You must have gotten it from Daddy or me, obviously. We have already started spelling words so we don't get your hopes up. You know what it means when we say "outside" or "walk". We're having a drought and a heat wave this summer, and it's been so very hot that we haven't been able to go outside much. As a result, Daddy and I spell those words.
My smart boy, you also know what I mean when I say "There's a big truck outside!" You race to the window to see it. You love big trucks! Construction equipment is even better. So it was very exciting for you when the water main blew at the corner of the street this week, and a giant front end loader was parked in front of our house. I took you outside and you touched it. It was a big moment in your week!
We're going to church today. Try no to be too vocal during services. Though I don't think anyone would mind hearing you say "Wowww, oh wowww, oh wowww!" It is completely adorable.
XOXOXO

Everything is just a phase
Doodle-doo,
You grew again. A few days ago I thought you were plumping up a bit - your cheeks were rounder and your tummy stuck out a little more; you were eating quite well. Then I noticed yesterday that you were suddenly bigger. You're definitely taller and you even feel heavier. When did you do that, sweetheart?
You've extended mercy on the parmesan cheese and you leave it in the fridge now. Lately when I open the fridge, you like to assist me in closing it. It is so helpful, as you know.
These days, you come into the kitchen any time you hear me filling a glass of water. You'd like some, thank you. You understand me well enough that you now permit me to take a drink of my own water before insisting you have your own swizzle. Thank you for that.
On the flip side, you've watched me fill my glass with water so many times using the dispenser in the door of the fridge that you know how to do it yourself. You put your sippy cup up to the water dispenser yesterday and it shot water all over the fridge and the floor. This must be why there is a "Lockout" option on the dispenser. We use it now.
Your 16-month stats: 31 inches long (I'm going to have to measure you again!) and 22.5 pounds.
New this month: You give kisses! I learned this by accident. We were reading the "Elmo Loves You" book. At the end, Elmo asks if you will give him a kiss. And right after I read that line, you kissed him! So now Mom and Dad ask for kisses all the time and we love them. You just lean in and touch our face with yours. No lip-smacking sounds yet. So cute.
All your molars are pushing on your gums. It bothers you some, and I can feel them making ridges under your gums. Poor baby. We feed you ice cream to soothe your mouth and we've still got you wearing your teething necklace. You also eat Hyland's Teething Tablets. It helps.
I love you darling! Here's a kiss from Mom.

The parmesan is missing again
Tiny thieving baby,
You are so quick and clever. When I open the refrigerator to get a single item, you usually race to the fridge and swipe the parmesan cheese from its spot on a low shelf. You know right where it is and you snatch it so fast! You parade your stolen goods around the house with glee. I used to try to stop you, but I now find it very funny.
Also, YOU are very funny. You've developed quite a sense of humor. You like to run around wearing a hooded towel like a cape. You smash your face into the couch cushions and giggle. You growl. You spin in circles until you make yourself dizzy. We have so much fun with you!
At dinner time you have been more adventuresome lately. You are willing to eat carrots, green beans, hamburger meat, and more. You often eat eggs for breakfast. Sometimes you even seem tired of cheese, which is amazing. I think your taste buds must be educating you. Food is good! Cheese is not the only food in the world! Let's eat!
You say a few words: "walk", "no", and "momma". You also make some appropriate sounds, like "moo" when you see a cow, and "woof woof" when you see a dog. You love to see dogs! You go apes over your "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?" book. I think it's your favorite book, but you really love books.
Now. This morning you waltzed into the kitchen and didn't come back right away. That isn't like you. I heard too much silence, so I went in to check... and I found you standing on the third step down the stairs toward the laundry room. What a heart attack! Clearly, you can handle stairs, or I would have heard a whole bunch of noise as you tumbled down them. But your momma is not ready for you to be going down stairs. Not at all. So please let's not do that again for a while.
All my love,
Mom

It's Father's Day!
It's Father's Day, baby!
You gave Daddy a package of underwear, which is a family tradition I am passing along to you. Each Father's Day, my siblings and I would give our dad these three things: a pack of underwear, a pack of socks, and a Chunky bar. Your daddy would not like the Chunky bar. (It has raisins! He hates those.) And he doesn't currently need socks. By next year, he surely will!
You love Daddy. You LOVE Daddy. You think he is tons of fun. (After all, he never makes you take naps.) And he is really soft on you. You know what he did this Father's Day? He bought you a swimming pool. And not just a tiny pool, but an inflatable "family size" pool that gets up to 18 inches deep. He loves you!
When you are older, I hope you will be a lot like your daddy. He is kind, gentle, patient and friendly. He's also very smart, which you are, too. Many, many people love your dad. They will love you, too.
When you're big enough to go fishing with your daddy, ask him to tell you the story about the big bass that got away when we were fishing in Arkansas. He probably can't wait to go fishing with you.
Until then, you and your daddy have stuff to do! Trucks to push! Balls to throw! Breakfast to eat together! (Daddy usually lets mommy sleep in and he feeds you Cheerios while you watch Curious George.) Enjoy, sweet boy!

Dear Best Baby in Whole World
Sweet baby! Hello! You are napping in your crib right now. Thank you!
As promised, we bought you a sandbox last weekend. Then the next day our neighbor sold us his swing set for $10. What a steal! It came with an attached plastic slide, which I thought you hated... but you love it! I hold you steady and you swoosh down the slide again and again. You even try to launch yourself down the slide. This is great! Maybe next time we go to the park you will finally enjoy the slides.
We have more news. You've been seen eating veggies multiple times now. What has gotten into you, child? You stuffed your mouth with green beans last night. You did it! You are also willing to eat carrot. Dad and I are simultaneously breathing a sigh of relief. We didn't want you to be a child who only eats cheese and crackers.
Today I asked you to bring me your truck, and you did. It was heavy for you and hard for you to carry, but you lifted it high and gave it to me. Yesterday Daddy asked you to bring him one of your new toy balls, and you did. You really know what we are talking about! Certain topics around the house may have to change. :)
N-A-P-T-I-M-E is still a dirty word.
XOXOXO, my love!

What's going on?
Doodle,
Something is afoot. Only you know what it is, and you're not saying.
You began sleeping through the night a few weeks ago after we let you cry it out. You did not like that, but you quickly caught on to the joy of sleeping for long, consecutive hours. And thank you for that. As your loving mother, I found the experience devastating. You were far more resilient.
Then you got fussy about a week later. Perhaps it was teething, but you were still fussy when your grandma from up north came to visit. She was here from May 29 - June 3. You were cantankerous. Toward the end of her visit, you also decided to stop sleeping in your crib for naps. You had major meltdowns (I think it made you panicky) and would not sleep a wink. Since then, all naps have been taken on Mom's lap. I try every day to place you in your crib for your afternoon nap, but you cannot handle it.
Your dad and I think you are having separation anxiety, triggered by your crib. That is the last place in this house that you want to be.
So Mom's not getting much done around here.
We appreciate that you are still willing to sleep in your crib for most of the night. You have been successful in worming your way into our bed three times since Grandma left, though.
In other news, you are getting around the house in record speed. You walk very well! You like to walk laps between the kitchen, dining room and living room. (Funny, that's just what I used to have to do to get you to go to sleep!) You push trucks, trains and other toys around that circle, too.
You've also conquered shoes. You used to hate them and scream if we put any such thing on your feet. Now you understand that wearing shoes means you're going outside. You love outside! So you let me strap on your sandals or tug on your shoes whenever I want. Thank you.
Outside, your favorite thing is dirt. The more, the better. The dirtier, the better. Add water to make mud? The best! Daddy and I are planning to get you a sandbox this weekend. We don't have a truck, so we are having your friend's dad help us.
You also love to play with balls. You say "ba! ba! ba!" when you see a ball. You've said a few other things, too. You say "boh boh" for book. (You love books!) You've said "giddy" three times for kitty. And today, when I told you no, you responded with "noooo". Of course, you also say "mama" too. Usually you say that when you are complaining and want me to fix something (like take you out of your crib!).
Today I handed you a package of cheese from the fridge and asked you to take it to Daddy, who was sitting at the table. You trotted that cheese right to Daddy and handed it to him. Wow! We were both impressed. I didn't know you could understand so well, considering you still like to turn on and off the TV and printer, and you still tug on Howie... even after being told not to.
Lastly, you turned 15 months old today. Here are your stats: You are 30 inches long and you weigh 21.5 pounds. That puts you in the 14th percentile for height and the 10th percentile for weight. You have five teeth, and two bulges where more teeth are getting ready.
So that's what's going on.
We love you, darling. You can take your naps on me again tomorrow, but starting next week, let's get back in the crib, OK?
XOXOXO

To sleep, perchance to dream
It's time to sleep, darling. All through the night with no wake ups. Can't you tell that's what time it is?
We've had ups and downs with you in terms of sleep. We were on an up before we went to the Feast in 2011. Then we went south for Thanksgiving and out west over Christmas. It did a real number on your sleeping. You went from waking up once per night to three or four times.
It was just getting back to a somewhat pleasant single waking per night when we let you get overtired one Sabbath three weeks ago. That night you woke up five times. The next night you woke up four times. The following night, and for many nights in a row, three times. Finally, finally last Thursday you gave us a single wake-up night. You repeated it the next night, and one other night since.
But then came last night. You basically skipped your afternoon nap and your dad and I had a bad feeling about that. You went to bed early, and got up four times. Your last wake-up was at 4:30, and I couldn't get you back to sleep after rocking you for a whole hour.
I was frustrated. Daddy was frustrated. Daddy brought you downstairs and stayed with you until 7:30, when momma got you back to sleep. It's been a day, I tell you.
We are going to give it some thought and do some research, and things are going to change. We hope. Because there are three people in this house (that includes you) who need to sleep through the night.
We love you. Remember that, always.

Mother's Day 2012
![]() |
| Me and you |
Sweet baby.
It's Mother's Day. I'm not sure what the world wants for mothers on Mother's Day, but I know what it means to me. It's a day - but not the only day - for counting blessings. I became a mother when I had you, and you are a perfect gift. I don't want a day at the spa, or a pedicure, or a nap by the pool. I want to pet your soft tummy, give you sips of my water, read books to you, and hold you close.
When you lean your head against me, I feel perfectly happy. When I hear you talk or even breathe, I'm sure there's never been a sweeter sound in the world. You are like music in my soul.
Sometimes I am convinced that my heart beats because your heart beats.
Thank you for Mother's Day, my love.

Everything is a telephone
You know, you're really, really cute.
Right now, you pretend everything is a telephone. Just a moment ago, you held a bag of Hall's Honey Lemon cough drops up to your ear and "talked" into them. It sounded like "Eee eh eh ah ahh!" Then you replaced the cough drops with your flat, empty hand. Apparently that works just as well. Earlier, you used a car and the remote control as a phone. You also play telephone with my real cell phone (I trust you not to put it into your mouth now), and I'm pretty sure you're calling grandma.
Cutest thing I have EVER seen. That's you.

My big boy
Ah, sweetheart. You are growing up so fast. You are hurtling toward age two. It makes me emotional. I absolutely love my big boy, but I'm so amazed by you.
Not very long ago, you were a tiny, squalling little guy who just wanted to eat, sleep and be held. Now you are walking around (or running, if you have something to hang on to), eating solid foods, requesting I read books to you, and expanding your mind every day. You love to open and close doors. You get a thrill out of shredding paper and stuffing it into boxes. You like to swirl the curtains around yourself and hide. You love your baseball and carry it around. You squeak when you see cats. You like garlic. You hold my cell phone to your ear properly and talk.
It's so fun to watch you. It's even more fun to play with you. And one of the very best things - you like to climb into my lap every five minutes or so for a hug and kiss. You love me! It's the sweetest thing in the world.
We took you down south last weekend to visit family. You rode in your new car seat like a trooper. You hardly fussed. You didn't nap at all on the way down, probably because you could see everything! You love that. At Grandma and Grandpa's, you didn't sleep well at night. Both nights you got up and Daddy took you to the living room. After a while he passed you to Gammie and she played and cuddled with you. The first time, she slept next to you on the couch for 2.5 hours. I can't even try to guess how much she loved that.
We took you to church, where you were very celebrated. You got the mother's room all to yourself. You thought that was awesome! And the next day we took you to a picnic, where you outshined even the tastiest of treats. People just wanted to look at you, hold you, and take your picture. You still thought the tall men with facial hair were very scary. Sorry about that.
I love you, darling. As we get close to my second Mother's Day, I can't help but think how much I love you and how thankful I am for you. It will be a happy Mother's Day, indeed.
XOXOXO, Momma

What's cookin', Fussingpants?
You slept in today. That is a rarity. Normally you chime in at 7 a.m. and start the day for us. But you took the morning off today; thank you!
When I came in to get you at 8:45, you had pooped in your diaper. I found pieces of crayon in it. Yes, crayon.
Yesterday we went to the grocery store and they were having an anniversary celebration. The cashier said you could have a tiny packet of four crayons. They came in a little box, and I let you carry them out of the store. You were thrilled.
I heard you sucking on the box as we drove from there to pick up the cat from the vet. I got an inkling that it might not be a good idea, but I was in the front seat and you were in the back, so I made a mental note to check the condition of the crayons when we got to the vet.
You had chewed a hole in the corner and eaten the tip of the red crayon. I opened your mouth, and there were only tiny bits of paper and crayon left. Nothing salvageable.
Actually, your willingness to eat crayons is a surprise. You come across as a very picky eater. I'm having trouble thinking of ten foods you willingly swallow:
Scrambled eggs
Applesauce
Chips
Mashed potatoes (limited amount)
Cheese
Crackers
Bread
Ice cream
Strawberries
Beef (certain kinds, but not hamburger)
Chicken (sometimes)
Pear
So that's 12 things. Yes, I'm surprised, too. If I add "crayon" to the list, you'd be at 13. Nice.
Please sleep well tonight.
With all my love,
Mom

My little boy
It happened this week that one morning, you suddenly didn't look like a baby anymore. You looked like a little boy, and you have ever since. You must have grown overnight.
You're very fun, and learning so much. I think you understand a lot of what I say. And this week you learned to sign "more". You showed off this new skill at dinner tonight when asking for more of grandma's applesauce. Mmm, I understand completely.
You've been napping like a champ lately - you took two three-hour naps today. Mom got a lot done! And when you were awake, you were so sweet. Thank you for the nice days we had today and yesterday!
Xoxoxo, my little boy.

Walking is for babies
Noodle, you're getting your walking shoes on! You've been walking more in the past couple days. In fact, you were taking steps as I typed that. Five or six steps seems to be your max. After that, you want to grab something or drop to your bum. (Thankfully, your cloth diapers give you a pretty good cushion.)
What a BIG boy you are!
You've had trouble sleeping lately, which I blame on teething. You're also less willing to eat real food, which people say is also due to teething. I tell you, darling, teething is a hassle. It hurts you and it disturbs almost everything. You've spent a couple days being very, very fussy. At times it was hard to remember that everything is just a phase. But here you are, with gums bulging with almost-here teeth, happier. Right now you're carrying around your baseball, chattering and sputtering. You're going to be fine. You're just getting ready to eat steak!
Momma would like to thank you for the new phone she is about to get. Apparently, you knocked over your "no-spill" bottle of bubbles and the liquid soaked the back of my phone. My phone went into convulsions earlier today, while I was talking to your grandpa from up north, and it will never be the same. Daddy and I are going to the store in a few minutes to find me a new phone. I've been wanting one for a while, so thank you.
In other news, our plumbing work is done. The back yard has been reduced to a giant brown puke. Underneath it lies brand new plastic piping, surprisingly superior to the clay pipe laid nearly 50 years ago. Inside was a giant mass of roots that couldn't be loosed with an auger. In the process of getting new pipe, we lost one cedar tree. This means we can see a little more of the neighbor's house than we used to. It's a small price to pay in order to flush toilets with confidence - no more risk of sewage visiting us in the basement. One day soon you might even be allowed to walk around down there.
With all my love,
Mom

Yesterday
We overdid it yesterday. I'm sorry, love. You went to two parks, saw lots of kids, spent hours outside, petted a cow, touched goats with your toes, missed both naps and cried all night. You even sprang a fever for a few hours. It was hard on all of us. Momma is sorry. I didn't know that it would be too much for you.
You played with another little friend Saturday night, and it was charming to watch the two of you together. It makes me want to get you together with more little friends more often. That's why I tried both activities with you yesterday. From now on, one thing per day. And maybe with nothing on the agenda the next day.
Thankfully, there is nothing on our agenda today. Except for having our back yard dug up to fix our plumbing issue. Our main drain is backed up majorly, and it brings nasty stuff up in our basement. Really nasty. Like maybe no one can ever have bare feet down there ever again. It's good to get it fixed, first, so that it's fixed. Second, since the basement is our tornado shelter, it is important that we not be cowering amongst turds in the event of a tornado. Revolting!
I love you darling. Want to help me make bread now?

Songs I sing to you
The first time I ever sang to you, I felt embarrassed and very self-conscious. Would you like my singing? Would you think I was "a little bit pitchy, dogg"? Would you laugh at me from behind those crying eyes?
I sang:
To know, know, know Sam
Is to love, love, love Sam
And I do
Yes I do
Yes I do
You liked it! You quieted a little, so I kept singing. I was still embarrassed. Grandma from up north was there, and she told me to keep singing. I sang you that song when you cried for a few days - you were not even a week old - before getting more courage and trying new songs.
Now, I sing you lots of songs. I sing them terribly most of the time and I am not embarrassed. It is wonderful how much the music helps you calm down when you're upset.
Here's one I wrote for you:
I could eat you for breakfast,
But you're too sweet.
I could eat you for lunch,
If I liked feet.
(But I don't!)
As a dinner appetizer,
I'd rather feast on fertilizer.
So I'll pass.
And I'll just kiss you, my sweet.
Who knows what you think of that one!
I also sing Soft Kitty to you, and we have a diaper-changing version:
Fresh dipey, clean dipey, getting a fresh dipey.
Thank you, Momma, that feels better, I love you.
To help you fall asleep, I sing Edelweiss, The Lord is My Shepherd, Soft Kitty, and these words, that I made up to the Naming Stars lullaby:
Go to sleep my little one
Go to sleep my little son
Momma loves you, Daddy too
Go to sleep, my little Boo.
Those are the songs you usually hear. I make up random stuff all the time, I sing about the doggie in the window and old MacDonald's farm sometimes, and I learn new songs, too. I'm excited for when you will sing with me, and for when you tell me which songs are your favorite. Until then, don't worry. I'll never eat you, no matter how sweet you look.

You're a little bit little
At the grocery store last week, the clerk asked how old you were. When I told her you're 13 months old, she said "He's small! My boy is 8 months old and he's bigger than that!"
Mind you, this woman is large in size, if you know what I mean, and she said her son's daddy is in excess of 6 feet tall. Her baby's gonna be big!
Your daddy and I are not overly tall, and you're probably going to be like us. But here are your measurements:
You currently weigh 21 pounds, and you are 30 inches tall. That puts you in the 20th percentile for weight and the 40th percentile for height. You are pretty little, my dear.
However! You certainly have something to say about that. You are sure you're a big deal. You think you are the axis of this cat-filled universe. You are certain that it's never nap time, veggies are a crime, and you have the right to pull Howie's tail, chew my cell phone, and order ghastly Pay-Per-View shows on TV (all things you have completed or attempted). Congratulations, darling.
We have news for you. You're napping right now. We've planted a garden full of veggies. You'll enjoy them later! And you're not allowed to touch the cats, gum my cell phone, or change the channel.
But you are a REALLY big deal to us!

WE LOVE DOODLE!!
Sweet baby boy, you gave us a fantastic surprise last night!
You slept through the night! ALL the way through! For the first time, ever!
We are so proud of you! You did it on the evening of the day you turned 13 months old. We didn't dream this night was coming! Momma thought you might never sleep through the night, and that she might never again sleep through the night either. Oh, we are thrilled!
As a result, we would like to give you everything. What would you like? A pony? A litter of puppies? One of those motorized kiddie cars? I'll have Daddy pick them up today!
In other news, you are mostly better from your cold. Daddy and I both caught it, too, and we are mostly better as well. It wasn't a bad cold for any of us, but it did majorly interfere with the spring holy days. We are just thankful to all be feeling better.
Xoxoxo, my love!

Your fourth tooth
[Next day update: You ARE sick, and so is Mom.]
We are rethinking the idea that you are sick. It seems you are actually teething! Poor thing, this tooth has been really hard on you. It's on the top of your mouth, to the right of your other top tooth. It's funny that you're not getting your second front tooth, but you will get it in time. I'm sorry teething is such a pain. You sure felt awful yesterday. Today you are a little fussy, but you don't have a fever or a runny nose. Hooray!
Last night was one of your worst nights of sleep ever. You can thank us later, but you got Mom up four times and got Dad out of bed from 5 - 7 a.m. straight. You cried a lot. We gave you teething tablets and Children's Tylenol, but I'm not sure anything helped. Except being held...that made you feel a little better.
I love it when you're cuddly!
Our garden is largely coming up! We have potatoes, summer squash, cucumbers, okra, and corn up. We are waiting on a few sprouts in the green beans and basil rows...we can't tell if the ones there are weeds or plants. And there is no sign of life in our acorn squash yet. Here's hoping everything comes up in abundance!
We are having roasted chicken for dinner. Would you like some?
Xoxoxo,
Mom

A spring cold
Aww, Doodle, you caught a cold! Your fever is 100 degrees and you have a cough and runny nose. I am so sorry you're sick. You feel a little down, but mostly you just want to keep playing. When you get tired, though, you get cuddly. That's adorable. You know your Momma loves to cuddle with you!
This is not the first time you've been sick. You got sick at just two months old, a germ you probably picked up at your two-month check-up. It was terrifying. You could hardly breathe, and you could not eat because then you couldn't breathe. It was very scary for us, even though it was just a cold. You were tiny! Now you're just a few days away from being 13 months old and you are so strong. We hate that you are sick, but you look us in the eye with a big grin, as if to say, "Hey, it's not so bad. And can we go outside?" Thanks, dear.
You are getting so knowledgeable, too! You seem to understand much of what I say. Yesterday I sat you on my lap and told you it was time for me to trim your fingernails. I put one of your fingers on my knee and said we'd start with that finger. For the first time, you didn't move the finger at all. You sat still and watched. I trimmed all of your long nails and thanked you for sitting so still. (Until Howie walked by, you barely moved!) It's so much different from your old ways of squirming, fussing and flailing during a nail trimming. Momma likes this new way better.
Feel better quickly, my love. We have important things to do this week!
I love you so, so much.

What I think you're thinking
If I could hear what's going on inside your head, this is what I think it would sound like:
Hey, there's Elmo on the shelf. [giggle] What a friendly guy! Wait. That's not where I left him. Mom must have moved him. I hate that. How would she feel if I moved her stuff? Wait. I do that. Anyway, I'm going to put him here. [tosses on floor] Look! There's Clifford. What a big doggie. [tosses on Elmo] Oh, yes, there's my giraffe. [throws on Clifford] Wow, I haven't seen that owl in a while. [discards] Man, my books are out of order. Big books first. [pulls off shelf] Ah, it says...hmm...boring. Next book. [pulls off shelf] Trucks. Yes! Next book. Next book. These seven books are in my way. [scatters all on floor] This shelf looks weird. Mom doesn't decorate well. All these books have to go. [empties shelf completely] Wow. There are books all over my feet. I don't like that. [shoves books] Now the books are touching my animal toys. Annoying. Let me just move that giraffe. Hey! There's Elmo!
Am I right?
Love,
Your Mom

So...he's a boy?
We met the neighbors the other night and they were not sure about you. You were dressed like a boy, but your hair is getting so long and you were wearing that...necklace. The neighbor lady hesitated after I introduced you, and said, "So he's a boy?"
Yes. Of course you are a boy. A very handsome little boy. You wear an amber teething necklace which is supposed to ease the pain of teething. And your hair is long for two reasons: 1) You are incapable of holding still, and 2) I can't bring myself to cut it yet.
Baby hair is enchanting. It floats. It is wispy and silky smooth. After a bath, the top if your hair stands up. After a nap, the back of your hair sticks out. It is precious. I don't want to cut your precious little hairs!
Daddy mentions the length of your hair every day, but he doesn't dare cut it either. Scissors? Around your whirling dervish head? Not a good idea.
But don't worry, my love. Even with your long hair and your girly necklace, you are the cutest thing on the planet. You can trust me when I say that, because I'm your mother. :)

Communication is key
Doodle, you are learning to communicate with us!
While you are not talking in sentences or even saying "cat", you do say "Mama" and you know what "Daddy" means. Sometimes when I ask you where Daddy is, you shake your head "no". Daddy is not here, you are saying. You also shake your head no when we try to feed you something icky, like green beans or carrots. If that doesn't deter us, you wave both hands back and forth, creating a complete barricade between the food and your mouth. Very clever, and very effective.
Oh, it doesn't stop there! When you want something, you've learned to babble sentences of "Eh! meh! meh! eh! eh! meh!" You flail your free arm toward what it is you want (usually whatever I am eating or drinking). I share with you nearly every time, only depriving you of coffee or peanut butter. We haven't introduced you to nuts yet, and I probably won't offer you coffee until you're 18. Both are delicious; look forward to it.
You enjoyed mashed potatoes tonight for the first time. I hadn't offered you mashed potatoes in months, and the last time I did it was truly just boiled, mashed potato. You hated it. This time it had some delicious butter, salt and half & half mixed in. You were a big fan of them! Daddy and I enjoyed them too. It's nice to be able to share our real foods with you.
We are going to plant a garden tomorrow. You can supervise from your office, OK? We will plant corn, carrots, potatoes, squash and maybe tomatoes. Green beans, too, if I can find my seed packet. I'm so excited!
I'm going to get some sleep before you wake me. It makes me tired, but I do look forward to seeing you in the night. It's really the only time I get to cuddle you now.

YOU WALKED!
Darling, you walked yesterday! You took three steps to Mommy, and later took four and five steps to get to Daddy! You step quickly and need to grab onto something after a few steps. We are so impressed, my dear.

Get it all out of here
One of your very favorite things is to empty your bookshelves (you've got the bottom two in my bookcase) of their toys and books. You do this several times a day. In fact the shelves are laid waste at this moment. Daddy calls it a "Samuel tornado". You call it your job. I think it's adorable. And so are you.

Things you think are scary
The vacuum.
Uncle Ken.
"Uncle" Gary.
Rex from Toy Story, when he is waved in your face.
Men with dark facial hair.
Big dogs.
Barking dogs.
Being left to play by yourself.
Your Cozy Coupe car.
Shoes on your feet.
Swings and the slide at the park.
You may also have a terrible fear of sleeping through the night. Still, I'd like you to try it.

At home with Momma
I pulled you onto my lap today and asked you to sit with me and watch the world go by. You lasted 9 seconds. You are just too busy to watch the world go by. You have toys to toss, books to browse and a laundry basket to fill. Take that, world. You are boring to my son.
You blew me away this week! Clearly I have underestimated how much you know and understand. I asked you "Where's Daddy?" on Thursday and you pointed to the door. That's where we go to watch Daddy come home from work. Thinking it could have been chance, I asked you "Where's Mommy?" You turned and patted me. Still uncertain, I gave you one more test. "Where's the kitty?" I asked you. You pointed straight at Howie. I was so impressed! Now I am telling you more about what's around you and I bet you are paying attention.
We are waiting for Daddy to come home from church right now. We stayed home today because we have had a terrible time sleeping (oddly enough, I couldn't sleep last night even when you WERE sleeping). That third tooth is still not through, and it is bothering you a lot. We are also hoping to avoid the terrible flu that's going around the congregation. We had a good Sabbath at home. You took the day of rest very literally and had a two-hour nap. You do live the life, my child.
I love you. :)

What's new
Some people had a very busy day today. Our neighbors in the brown house moved to Arizona today. They were very busy. We went for a walk and saw one man blowing leaves off his driveway. Another man was edging his lawn with a noisy weed whacker. (You were fascinated.) We saw one black kitty crossing the street, and one rescued Corgi named Barney who was walking his owner.
But we didn't have much to do today. We watched the neighbors packing up and Mommy went to talk to them twice. They were perfect neighbors... we could never even tell if they were home. They had an 8-year-old daughter who often traipsed across our lawn on her way home from school. It was adorable.
I wish they weren't leaving.
But they are. Life is always bringing in new things and taking away old things. You will learn that.
When we were on our walk today, the blossoming fruit trees smelled so good it could make a person want to live forever. I hope you caught a whiff. You talked excitedly for much of our walk...probably about how good it smelled outside.
Your third tooth is coming through, and will be your first tooth on the top part of your mouth. It bothers you more than the bottom two seemed to. Your second tooth came through just yesterday. You sure took your time getting teeth, but it's happening quickly now.
You tend to take your time with everything, it seems. Starting with your arrival, during which you traveled at a snail's pace and arrived 45 hours later. Then you didn't want to crawl for what seemed like an eternity. (When you decided to crawl, you developed a travel technique that makes you look somewhat like an injured soldier. You use one knee properly, but extend your other leg out straight.) And you're still not sleeping through the night, as we have already mentioned. Did you know that I was sleeping through the night by the time I was 6 weeks old? And your father was sleeping through the night by two or three months old? Perhaps you could reconsider your routine to be more like us. Just a suggestion.
You are sleeping right now. I think I will wake you up and give you a bit of your own medicine. Besides, if I don't wake you up now, you won't go to bed tonight until 10 p.m. Wouldn't that be exciting for you!
I adore you. xoxo

Your birthday
On your first birthday, it was business as usual...for the most part! Your grandma and grandpa from up north were here. Grandma and I took you shopping for strawberries, shortcake cups, chips and ice cream. You were good all day, as if you didn't even notice it was your birthday.
I spent a little time remembering the day I met you. You were so little and skinny! You weighed just more than 7 pounds. You didn't move much, and you slept a lot that day. I was amazed at you, enthralled by you and frightened of you. I didn't know much about babies, and I really didn't know you at all yet.
Over your first year, we learned so much about you. You are an early riser. You are very social. You are curious about everything you see and you use your feet as if they are hands. You think kitties are toys and dogs are hilarious. You love music and you've definitely got rhythm! You love to take your socks off and refuse to wear shoes. You think riding in the shopping cart is meant to be done sideways. You seem to know that we love you, and Daddy and I are your favorite people, ever. Your feelings get hurt when we just tell you "no", as if you are sad that you disappointed us.
You never disappoint us. You sometimes need correction, but you are learning very quickly.
I held you as you fell asleep on your first birthday, and I cried a little. I wish I hadn't been so afraid of you when you were small. I don't know how the year passed so quickly or why I can hardly remember it. But I am so thankful for you! I love you more than you can believe.
Happy birthday, sweet boy!

Your first tooth
You got your first tooth on February 21, and it is still coming in. It sticks up so much now, though, that we can see it when you grin. You like to run your tongue over it and clink it onto things, like your water cup. Your next tooth is slowly coming in next to it, and it's not giving you much trouble. But right now we can't find your Hyland's teething tablets, so we are just hoping that tooth behaves until we can find them. By the way, where did you put them?
You like to take small drinks of water from your sippy cup. You love cheese and cheese-flavored crackers. And you love to have yogurt with rice cereal for dinner. Forget about carrots, though. And green beans can take a hike. You are sure babies are not supposed to eat that.
You have never really slept through the night...not yet. As a result, your momma has not slept through the night in about 16 months. I'm still alive and mostly functional. It is sometimes hard to put sentences together, which is another reason why I've created this Mr. Fussingpants memory spot.
You love bathtime, but you do not like it when I rest the frog bath toys on the side of the tub. We rinse your hair with a blue plastic cup, now called the "controversial cup" because you fuss if we don't give it to you. Once you filled it up and dumped it outside the tub. You're so funny!
Honey, you are the best little thing ever. We can't get enough of you. xoxoxo

To my son
Because you turned one two weeks ago.
Because you are just minutes away from walking.
Because you do things every day that delight us.
Because I don't want to forget ANYTHING about my time with you.
I'm writing it down now.
